Appreciate the honesty. Bosco was super impressive in how he dealt with that little dog. For the dog that attacked you about 6 months ago, did that dog come back and do more sessions with you?
Great video. We all need to share these stories. Success is a gradient. How can we truly messure success without tasting failure? Sometimes, you get bit. success is moving on, proceeding forwards and learning what we can. Keep up the good work.
Holy crap man, Bosco was such a boss. Being able to administer the right amount of punishment without ever hurting another dog requires a level of intelligence, awareness and self control that it just leaves me astonished to watch.
Oooh I’d love to hear about the Akita you showed a while ago that displayed no signs of aggression then suddenly attacked bosco. Also would love to see more cases of people aggressive dogs and how you deal with that.
Thank God my pit bulls aren't aggressive by nature. They are brothers, one is my helper dog similar to Bosco and the other loves every dog and every person he sees. The latter can be a problem also.
Hi Joel, as long as the dog goes away better from the training than which he began, I would consider a success. I once had a dog who was identified as having physiological issues who was never perfect but was manageable after months of professional intervention. Keep up the good work.
Man, I’m kinda sad to say that terrier is basically my doxie. I’m trying my ass off to train him to just be able to ignore dogs. Been in the midnight walkers club for months now.
I’m glad you brought this video to us…. Think about it, ppl sometimes are mentally ill from no fault of their own, they can SOMETIMES manage it only somewhat…I have to imagine their are dogs out there that are “somewhat” the same, and they too, will never be completely fixed, only managed somewhat.
I'm so glad I found this channel on accident. It's so interesting, and I've always watched trainers so I can know exactly how to deal with a dog's behavior in the best way. Because even the best behaved dog can't be predicted 100% of the time. They're still animals
That little terrier was like the keyboard warriors of today. He's bitching and yelling with the protection of the screen, but as soon as a real threat approaches him he backs into a corner. 🤣😂
What are your thoughts on placing the dog on its side as “submission”. I Recently ran across another trainer who does this with bully breeds a lot and seems to have some success with it, ive used it before when needed and it was helpful. Love the work you do!
I can't watch this video with sound because my dogs run to the back door!!! Lol This video proves you were doing your own thing even before YouTube. Not many “big box store” trainers doing any sort of “feisty fido” type stuff for sure.
How about get all the neighbours dogs over to your place Joel for a big play date to pop the cork and get you 100K subscribers. You’d have lots of footage after a few hours. Plenty to analyze. The catch is, there is no intervention from dog owners, the dogs can do whatever they want for a few hours.Let’s see some reality TV. Obviously serious fights must be broken up. But catch and release.Yeah it sounds insane, but big risk…big reward!
I love your videos and methods! I love what you teach and preach( it’s the say). Great break downs of what we see in the videos, with comments, explanations, out loud thoughts, the thinking process and the logic behind it…everything! Very helpful, very much appreciating the honesty and transparency of it all. I thought my dog how to walk calmly, without pulling on a leash thanks to your videos and advice. And even some stuff do not relate exactly to us with my dog i still continue to gather knowledge and enjoy watching. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Dani( the girl) and Bari( the Golden retriever from Bulgaria). ( I apologize that my comment is not specifically related to this particular video but i still wanted to say it).
Wow, I'm SO impressed with Bosco in that film. Each time he corrected the terrier, he actually waited to see if that would do it. He never closed his mouth, never lost control. The moment you turned him away, he came right with you. I've seen him in other videos, but this was a fantastic show of restraint. When you got Prince, did you got back to the same breeder you got Bosco from?
I’ve finally found a video that shows how my wire haired terrier starts a fight with my Pitbull and screams bloody murder when she tries and holds him down. Of course his terrible owner (my wife) is screaming “why is she attacking him!” And I’m telling her do you see any blood? That was a check.
Am so glad your channel came across my feed because I've learned alot since I started watching it… and I just want to say thank you for the information you provide…
Hey Joel! My dog is the one who went at you that day. I guess he's famous for something 😂. He was a pretty bad case by any measure but I need to clarify a couple of things:1) I did tell you that he didn't let people approach him (or me ) frontally. That's why he had the muzzle on because Prince was behind the deck fence and not in danger of being bit. I would never omit information as important as that.2) Several things were going on with him: he was found alone under a bush at the age of 5 mos (unknown past but bearing all the traits of an unsocialized pup); I am not sure what kind of treatment he got at the rescue organization; he was relatively new to me; his exercise requirements were not being met. Do you remember how 'amped up' he was as he ran around your yard? I had given up on trainers after that embarassing experience (sorry 😳) but I fortuitously ran into a trainer who got him into the dog park after one day! He used an Ecollar and some other methods on him for a couple of hours and I now take him to the dog park several times a week as well as to the 'people park' and he is a rock star! I still have a leash and 'half muzzle' on him at the dog park but he meets many dogs, wags his tail, play bows and initiates limited chases. Of course I will always have to keep an eye on him but he has made incredible progress!
When you said, “Not all people can be saved and not all dogs can be saved” was 💯 correct. But if they can be saved I have zero doubt that you are the trainer that could do it. Your methods work and there are 1,000's of success stores to prove it, including litter of dogs. On a different note do you ever work with cats, can they even be trained?
9:52 “People and dogs, they need to be shown their behaviours have consequences” So much this. With no consequences, unwanted behaviours escalate (not sure if it's the same for dogs though!)
Nothing will beat one dog’s correction to another. I work at a doggie daycare (def breeds a lot of annoying dog behaviors) and we have so many dogs that no matter how many times you correct them, they won’t listen but will instead get shut down really quickly by another dog. I won’t let dogs get beat up lol but if they get snapped at after pestering a dog then I praise the dog who gave the correction because that behaviour isn’t acceptable for play. I currently have a 6 month standard poodle puppy and he’s literally the happiest dog ever but he’ll pester dogs and think it’s a game when they correct him. Obviously he’s still a puppy but I really wouldn’t care if he gets in the wrong dog’s face and gets beat up lol because he needs to learn.
The heck with binge-watching Netflix series! I have been binge-watching Joel's videos since I found his channel. I have 2 little dogs but they are leash reactive. I have been following the method so religiously that my 6yo Pomchi, who has selective hearing, is 95% better at coming due to the come get method, and my new girl, a ??? JRT mix is much better on the walk. I do use a baby prong on her because she is like a ping pong ball if I don't. I'll just fade it out like he suggests fading out the gentle leader. I have zero interest in taking them to dog parks, but I would love to find a couple folks near me with good dogs to walk with so I can better socialize my girls. It's a struggle in a rural area. Off-leash, my girls are 100% perfect with other dogs, so funny, but they act like little badasses on leash. Thank you so much Joel for all this information!! Love this channel!!
Do you have a video of prince doing the same thing to another dog. Like the training that he knows he needs to do to correct dogs. Bosco is amazing. Love your videos and I've been watching for the last two months now and it's helped me with my 16 week old aussie shepherd
Joel, I have had this convo recently with the amazing trainer we worked with in utah and Koco Garcia whose leash course I utilized. I respect so much that you all can admit that not every dog can be “fixed.” We can improve and soften behaviors, strengthen bonds, etc. But not every behavior can be eradicated completely. I have spent the last year feeling like a failure because although my dog is a TON better in every sense of the word, she still insists on barking at stuff on the leash in our neighborhood (not at the park, not down town, just on our daily walks). If I only took success as being “well she hasn't stopped barking on a leash sometimes,” then I would have quit by now. But the fact that she now knows how to just chill out without being told, that she's not attacking my other dogs, that she has actually bonded to my other dogs, that she respects 95% of what I ask her to do without issue, etc is really the bigger picture.
yup my JRT is such an ass. (love her but it's just how she is. she was raised on a ranch hunting rodents and just doing her own thing. so she does have an “i'm the boss” attitude. ) Only our bigger dogs she was timid with, Anything else her size was “game.” for being bullied. Luckily your videos helped me establish boundaries and rules. She respects me and knows I won't allow her to bully other dogs. now that she's senile and halway deaf it's a struggle without a leash…. but She's always supervised ! only time she's not wearing a leash & collar is at home
Love seeing old videos of Bosco. His skills were truly amazing. I have a request. Can you please speak to your thoughts on retractable leashes, especially with large breed dogs on one of your videos? I just encountered an unruly huge 9 mth old German shepherd at my vets office yesterday. Was on this type of leash. Owner couldn't control him. He had to grab him by the collar. Dog was biting at him and flipping out. I told him he needed to try a gentle leader. He just shrugged. I asked the worker to ask him to wait outside with his dog. I feared for my 12 yr old poodle.
Bosco was amazing i only recently foubd your channel im enjpying watching your videos on dogs i like prince he is lovely i wish i was able to help dogs like you do
Mark of an honorable, respectable trainer……they willingly tell you about their successes & will also tell you about what they believe they could have done differently. One of the many reasons I have mad respect for Joel. I don’t think this is bad all. I think Bosco did exactly the right thing.
That little dog didn't go for blood, that little dog wanted to take a chunk of skin out of Bosco. Bosco showed so much restraint and composure in that video that it's almost unbelievable. I wish there were more videos of him.
Be honest i felt bad for the little dog who got backed into the corner at first. BUT after Bosco turned around and that little dude still tried to get back at Bosco, I felt that little terrier does have mental issue. Lol it's like you pick a fight at The Rock. The Rock threatens you to back away. And you still go back and sidekick the Rock. Well that's not a normal state of mind. Lol… seriously it is annoying seeing the little dog being aggressive and their owners think it's acceptable.
Even the best of the best lawyers lose cases and the best of the best DR's lose a patient sometimes. What matters is the work you put in, and you put in work!
That little dog did need a pinning… What are your thoughts on those trainers that use that kind dominance method as the human and pinning the dog on the side with “calm confident” energy? Such as Big Chuck McBride 😂 I don't agree with a lot of his methods, because not EVERY dog is “dominant” but he does manage big dominant dogs well sometimes, curious if you think that dog needed not just a DOG to say wassup, but if a human doing it would make an impact? Possibly owner/handler/boss of the house? Would that have worked to follow that up do you think? Then reintroduce Bosco afterwards? Or since the aggression is towards dogs and not humans then it would have to be a dog? Or is it the mentality all the same for the dog? And does it work for fearful dogs (that was a bit of fear too, backing up, and cheap shots only when Bosco turned his back, like herding dogs would do when nervous nipping your legs when you turn your back as if to say either “that's right get out of here” or to restart the fight out of obsessive enjoyment… ) Love your stories. Keep sharing.Still want to see your “day in the life” home video 😏 would be very relatable for many pet parents 😋
So touching to see new footage of Bosco being such a helper. What social intelligence that dog had. Love and [props to Bosco and the life of service he lived. Thanks to Joel!!
I meet a lot of people in the park, and I started stepping into dogs jumping up too. I mean I already did it with my dogs and ones I know, but now also with unknown ones. Not even so much on purpose, it's just become a habit. And usually people are like 'oh thank you, my dog needs that.' Couple days ago this lady made a huge scene, how I could just step away or do something else. And I just stood there like, 'uhm, you think it's okay for him to jump up to me like that?''No, but you don't have to be mean about it.' Meanwhile the dog is still at my feet looking up, waggling its tail.
There are people who can't be helped. There are dogs that can't be helped. And there are dogs that can be helped but they have people that can't be helped.
Almost all the “aggressive” dogs I see in your videos are just dog aggressive. I have a dog who is dog and people aggressive. I’d love to see more stuff dealing with people aggression. My dog is only good with my husband and I. Everyone else he barks and growls out. I’ve never met him get close enough to anyone to bite them but I’m sure he would if I gave him the chance.
This is my first time seeing Bosco and WOW! I see what you guys are always talking about now. My Doberman Bear saved my life when I was about 6 and I will never forget him. I'll always have a special place in my heart for Dobermans and Rotties. You do a great job by the way. Don't ever let any of these other trainers get you down. I saw some of the Karens giving you hell and wanted to throw that in the hat.
Do you think it’s more important for a dog to get consistent corrections at home/dog park or for the dog to get the socialization of day camp? At my dog’s doggy daycare they are punishing (a time out, as far as I know) my dog for correcting dogs that are being obnoxious to her ex: a smaller dog barking in her face and jumping on her. The daycare staff person said she went for a nip at this dog. My dog regardless of other dog’s behaviors around her has done things that do require a punishment (playing too rough/very pushy) but from the situations I am told it sounds like sometimes if the staff intervened sooner my dog wouldn’t have done the bad behavior. Another situation where she was punished is when she was playing with another dog at a high energy level and after a while it lead to her pinning the dog. I’ve only gotten these kind of reports a handful of times in the last year. Is this how the staff should be responding? When she is with me I allow her to give small corrections to dogs and I yell and clap to have an obnoxious dog at the dog park leave her alone after I’ve given time for my dog to correct appropriately or for the other owner to intervene. If she is the one in the wrong I do your mark and go get and sit method. Thanks for your videos, they’ve changed our life!
Would love to get your thoughts on prong, E and slip collars. Have you ever used them/ can they be used in a humane way? A trainer I started watching recently (upstate canine academy) uses them in about 80% of his videos. I went i with an open mind. Not being a dog professional it appears to be very humane/ educated way to introduce them.
I've been watching your videos for over 2 years now, and I just found out recently that you were my boss's boss! I was shown the same exact clip. It's astonishing how small the world is!
That red Doberman was really amazing, in teaching that terroir some manners. I did see an American bulldog, that took a little aggressive dog like that by the neck, and flip him over and shake him, without killing him, and it scared that little dog straight. But if the Doberman tried that, I’m sure the owner would have flipped out, and panicked. But I’ve seen a Rottweiler literally rip apart a little dog like that, splattering blood all over the room, so I would have panicked too. So the Doberman was really amazing in his control. Backing the dog down in a corner, without even as much as a nip! The red Doberman, is probably the most amazing dog I have ever heard of, and is is much better than the black one Joel currently uses. Joel did the right thing, in his story, In not letting that dog back him off. It just reinforces bad behavior, if you back off. Sometimes you got to take some hits, but in the end, you win. The best example is that guy with the Bison, that rammed him all day, and he ignored it. I think it’s possible, that any dog can be helped. It just depends on the amount of time the owner wants to take with it.
I worked at a local groomers shop for 3 months last year and they had some regulars that NO ONE could look at, walk by them nor touch. Only one of the groomers was allowed as she'd been grooming them for YEARS as no one else would. Some even moved a few hours away and they still come to her for their grooming needs. So, yeah, there are dogs that can't be helped. I'm talking about crazy nutty dogs that don't stop shaking, starring at you, all while ALWAYS flashing their teeth, growling and breathing heavily.
That little dog is a total Cartman! His mommy never could maker herself draw the line with him.. Or tell him, “What’s up..” Has the mindset that he can get away with literally anything and won’t actually be in any real trouble. Great demonstration of a Cartman! 🙂
Wednesday of this week, there was a new client that i took on, that in the message thread forgot to mention that their pitbull had a bite history, they only said aggression, which i always take into consideration. Fast forward to yesterday and the first time entering the home by myself without the humans, the dog literally went to attack me – If i didn't have the skillset I have there would have been a bite 100%. I had a session over the weekend with the humans in the home but it wasn't enough, that dog might need to be in a entirely new home to manage the fearful aggression and even then might not ever fully recover considering his history and age (was over 10yrs old). I would have never entered the home alone if I knew that. The humans were unwilling to cooperate after the fact & I have to consider it a fail as well, even though I did everything I could there are sometimes things we have to accept, thank you for sharing, I needed to hear this today, Joel.
Had that happen with a friend bring his dog over but he didn’t want for their dog to be told what’s up. So when my dog lunged back it rubbed him the wrong way and never came back with him which I respect because he does now take precautions with his super aggressive dog. But at the same time I was like dude, my dogs are super chill and they didn’t even initially bark they were just chilling and his dog was going crazy on his leash. I got them to relax for a while but that dog started growling in their direction and eventually I guess my dogs laying down for an extended period of time pissed him off and he lunged forgetting he’s on a muzzle. I try not to do this anymore if I know the dogs aggressive but my friend really wanted to get his dog to chill around other dogs.
You are right..Genetics play a big roll in a dogs temperament and bad breeding.I have had two reactive dogs and positive reinforcement does not cure this behaviour..I believe a dog needs boundaries and strong leadership but some dogs you just can not improve like schizophrenia. I am benefitting from your training techniques..Thank you ❤ 😊
You use your dogs as aversive tools, that is creative stuff. I also like your ideas around not needing any tools, I agree with that sentiment very much, you have two hands and two feet, who understands it understands it 🤣
Love your videos! Thank you so much for sharing. I really do like your methods, advice, and stories. The control that Bosco has is amazing. Prince is also an awesome dog to have as a partner.❤I'm not sure if you have time for a question, and it's okay if you don't, but I'll ask :0)I have an 8 mo. old male GSD. Not neutered. (I also have an 8 year old female GSD who is a great teacher.) My male gets into some pretty vicious squabbles with 2 other males of the same age that we walk with all the time. It is not usually my dog that starts it, it's the husky/lab mix, and it is usual over an item (stick, toy), and not even because my guy tries to take it from the other. It can start over a look. I'm not sure if they will sort it out at that age, or if we need to keep stepping in? Clapping and telling them to knock it off does nothing. They have to be separated. It can get pretty ferocious and sounds serious. I assume it is because they all think they are on the same hierarchy level. My boy is not like this with all other pups and he is always submissive to adult dogs. Thanks again for training videos.🙂
Like your truthfulness.i had German shepherds for about 25 years ..then changed to 85lb America pitbull..all 4 dogs had different personalities.so all had. to be treated differently.I just retired have time for new pal.thinking about another pit .both smart but pits are stubborn.will get training mostly for me…lol
Yes Joel!! 98.6k subscribers!!! been with this channel since before 20!!! awesome to see it growing so big!!
very honest, thank you!

Success is change and improvement

Bosco the “super dog”!!!

Honest and real in a world of fakery. Clear a space on your wall for a silver plaque. Stay humble and awesome! I hope you do, and I think you will.
Unmuzzled powerfull doberman near a tiny muzzled terrier? The brown dobe at the start..
That little white dog should be thankful Bosco didn’t end him
All good an unmuzzled doberman until an airdale terrier enters the room then it is one very badly ripped up doberman or dead.
Man, I’m kinda sad to say that terrier is basically my doxie. I’m trying my ass off to train him to just be able to ignore dogs. Been in the midnight walkers club for months now.
“If that's success to the owner, then we have failed.” That kind of confused me.

I literally LOVE every video with Bosco in it
Great video of Bosco at work… love it..
this is what happens almost each time I walk my Doberman in different places
Bosco is quite aggressive there you should never ever allow a dog to do the overcoming.
little fella scrapping like he's ten feet tall 🥰 Bosco 💚
Never seen your non dog videos!! Would like to see those

I really enjoy your stories and insightful take on past situations.

The communication u hv with ur puppers (“Bosco's like, 'Dude I'm not down with this dog''´) 🐾❤️🐾❤️🐾❤️
Aww….Bosco☺️💛
yup my JRT is such an ass.
👍🏽
Bosco is a king. Wonderful control.
That little dog didn't go for blood, that little dog wanted to take a chunk of skin out of Bosco. Bosco showed so much restraint and composure in that video that it's almost unbelievable. I wish there were more videos of him.
He's very passionate about attacking croc wearing families lol
Bosco, awesome !
Can you show videos on how you brought up prince?
Be honest i felt bad for the little dog who got backed into the corner at first. BUT after Bosco turned around and that little dude still tried to get back at Bosco, I felt that little terrier does have mental issue. Lol it's like you pick a fight at The Rock. The Rock threatens you to back away. And you still go back and sidekick the Rock. Well that's not a normal state of mind. Lol… seriously it is annoying seeing the little dog being aggressive and their owners think it's acceptable.
Love the stories! Bosco's a BOSS!!
I love waking up to see what Joel has posted. Bosco is amazing!
That was an awesome clip.
Love that boy bosco! 💕💕
Bosco did AMAZINGThat little terrier dog was a little horror and needed to be told off and put in it's placeWELL DONE BOSCOHe had such self control
Bosco really kept it in check, I can see why you hesitated this was intense. THANK YOU for sharing!
“People and dogs need to realize their actions have consequences “Truer words have never been spoken! Thanks!
Bosco is a beast!!!! 🙇🏼
That little dog is a total Cartman! His mommy never could maker herself draw the line with him.. Or tell him, “What’s up..” Has the mindset that he can get away with literally anything and won’t actually be in any real trouble. Great demonstration of a Cartman! 🙂
Hats off to you Joel. Your Doberman’s are remarkable. Terriers are terriers and that one was suffering the small dog syndrome big time.
Good quality content, keep it up. Your methods are helping me manage my Indian Spitz.
I am benefitting from your training techniques..Thank you ❤ 😊
Awesome stories. Weird question- how makes the jacket you're wearing. Dope shirt jacket.
Even tough ur a good trainer, ur videos are boring 🤷♂️
Send that dog to Caesar Milan, he’ll show you how it’s done, Caesar has an understanding of dogs that your average dog trainer doesn’t.
